Your natal chart is a map of the sky on the day you were born. This guide walks through it piece by piece, from your Sun, Moon and rising sign to the houses and aspects, so the symbols finally make sense.

What your natal chart tells you
A natal chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact minute and place you were born. It records where the Sun, the Moon and each planet were, which zodiac sign they were moving through, and which sign was rising on the eastern horizon.
Astrologers read that snapshot as a picture of temperament. The Sun describes what drives you, the Moon what you need to feel at ease, and the rest of the chart fills in how you think, love, work and handle pressure. It won't make decisions for you, but it often puts words to things you've sensed about yourself for years.
What a natal chart calculator needs
Every chart is calculated from the same three details. The more precise they are, the more of the chart you can rely on.
- Birth date places the Sun, Moon and planets in their signs. Most of the chart is already set by the date alone.
- Birth time sets your rising sign and the twelve houses. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so even an approximate time helps.
- Birth place gives the time zone and coordinates. The same minute in London and in New York produces two different rising signs.
No birth time? You can still read your Sun and every planet by sign, plus most aspects. Only the rising sign and the houses are left out, and on some days the Moon's sign is uncertain too.

If you only read three things in your chart, read these. The Sun, the Moon and the rising sign carry most of what a chart says about your character, and the rest of the chart builds on them.
Most people know only their Sun sign, which is why horoscopes often feel off. Add the Moon and the rising sign and the picture usually becomes much more recognisable.

Natal chart compatibility
Natal chart compatibility, also called synastry, compares two charts by laying one over the other. Instead of asking whether your Sun signs "match", it looks at where each person's planets fall in the other's chart and how they connect.
It describes the dynamic between two people rather than giving a yes-or-no verdict. Couples with challenging links can do very well once they understand where the friction comes from.

Is a natal chart the same as a horoscope?
No. A horoscope is written for everyone born under the same Sun sign. A natal chart is built from your own birth date, time and place, so it describes the sky at your birth and nobody else's.
Are natal chart, birth chart and astrology chart the same thing?
Yes. Natal chart, birth chart and astrology chart all mean the same map of the sky at the moment you were born. An astro natal chart is just another name for it.

How accurate is a natal chart?
It's only as accurate as your birth time. An hour off can change your rising sign and move planets into the next house, but the signs of the planets themselves stay the same.
Which house system is used?
Most charts use Placidus, the most common house system in Western natal chart astrology. Whole Sign houses are a popular alternative. The planets don't move; only the borders between houses shift.
Can astrology predict the future?
Not in a literal sense. Astrology is better at describing tendencies than events, so it's most useful for reflection and for asking better questions about your own life.
